Does sex therapy and counseling work?
Yes, and not always in the way clients or counselors expect. In many situations, client issues get worse before they get better. For instance, if you are depressed and we discuss your depression in counseling, you may feel the feelings associated with depression more strongly. The same principle applies to most issues. The goal of counseling is always to lessen client suffering and to provide clients a sense of direction and health in their lives. Many times, this requires that clients be willing to feel and express painful emotions and thoughts but always with the expectation that those thoughts and feelings will diminish in time.
Myriad researchers have found that counseling, especially in conjunction with psychiatric medication treatment, is safe and effective. Sex therapy is one of the most researched counseling modalities and has been found to be effective for many sexual problems. Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided to become a counselor for myriad reasons; of most relevance, growing up I experienced an excessive amount of shame and conflict related to my sexual identity development. Although this process was painful, it propelled me to realize my potential to help a growing community of people who are trying to make sense of the sexual self and express it in healthy ways. Also related to my desire to be a counselor, I believe that counseling is one of the most challenging and rewarding endeavors a human can undertake. It is not an easy job, but I relish the opportunity to see other people for who they are and allow them to challenge me in ways that constantly keep me growing and learning.
How do I know if you’re the right counselor for me?
Finding the right therapist is often a difficult process. At times, it can be overwhelming to consider all of the options available to you. I am often the right therapist for people who enjoy and need a compassionately direct approach. I am not a counselor who sits, listens, and nods. Also, the majority of my clients are looking for an expert on relationship and sexual dynamics. Because of my background, I offer a unique expertise that most therapists do not possess. If you are still not sure, please call my office for more information.
What are your qualifications?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas (#67546). I hold a PhD in Counseling from the University of North Texas. I am also pursuing sex therapy certification from AASECT. I have extensive training in sex therapy through both SMU and UNT, and I continually write, speak, and teach on the topic.
What is your cancellation policy?
I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you do not cancel or reschedule your appointment within 24-hours, I will require that you pay the full cost of the session.
How much does therapy cost?
$185 per 50 minute session
$225 initial 60-minute intake assessment session (required for your first visit)
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept cash, check, and all major credit cards including FSA and HSA cards for payment.
Do you take insurance?
I do not currently file directly with your insurance company to cover the costs of our time together. Insurance companies are often not interested in giving clients exactly what they need; instead, they force clients into subpar options that are designed to enhance insurance company profits not give clients the best care. If you need someone in your network, I am happy to provide a referral; however, using your out-of-network benefits is often a good alternative while also giving you access to a highly trained, seasoned professional who best fits your needs. Especially with sex therapy, having access to the highest quality care is pivotal. I am happy to provide you with the documentation you will need to file for reimbursement using your out-of-network benefits. I also accept HSA and FSA cards for payment.
